Russia reaffirms its opposition to the NATO troops in Ukraine as part of security guarantees, writes The New York Times.
Russia wanted to emphasize his position on peace negotiations while European leaders gathered at the White House. Moscow issued a long statement on Monday rejecting NATO troops in Ukraine as part of any security guarantees.
“We reaffirm our position, repeatedly expressed, of categorical rejection of any scenarios that involve the presence of a military contingent of NATO countries in Ukraine,” Russia said.
The statement, whose author is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, also criticized the UK to promote this idea, part of a long tradition to blame London for the actions of the West that Moscow considers hostile to Russia, NYT noted.
At the negotiations that take place at the White House, all 7 representatives of Europe said that real peace, lasting peace, without “security guarantees”, is not possible. Among this possible guarantees would be the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine, to maintain peace, including American troops, an idea that Donald Trump rejected at the table with Europeans.
“We will help them, we will be involved,” Trump said.
