Trump suggested, after meeting the White House that helping the war could bring personal benefits, according to The Independent.
“If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I think this is … I want to try to get to heaven, if possible, I hear that I do not do too well. I am right at the base of the stairs.”Trump joked.
“But if I can reach heaven, this will be one of the reasons.”he added.
One of Trump's campaign promises was to mediate peace between the two countries and end the war more than three and a half years ago, when Russia invaded Ukraine. Recently, he also stated that he would like to win the Nobel Peace Prize and believes he deserves one for his efforts to reduce tensions between several countries.
Last week, the US president met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time in 2019. In a face-to-face meeting in Alaska, the two leaders started discussions about what would need to initiate peace negotiations with Ukraine.
Putin has clarified that Moscow is not willing to initiate an immediate armistice – something other European leaders and Trump have supported. Russia could also request that Ukraine will give up some of its territory in exchange for the cessation of violence that have taken hundreds of thousands of lives.
Trump is a practicing, non-denominational Christian, and said that he believes he can reach heaven doing good deeds.
“If I am good, I will go to heaven, and if I am bad, I will go elsewhere – there, right?” Trump said last year to the host Fox News, Laura Tregraham.
