Spain is in the third week of the heat, and the fires included large areas in the northwestern and west areas, where the army was sent to help extinguish the flames, AFP reports. Castilla-Leon, Galicia, Asturias and Extramadura are the regions affected by forest fires.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez attended a fire control coordination meeting on Saturday. “The government continues to combat fires with all the means available,” Sanchez wrote on his X account.

According to the Spanish press, Pedro Sanchez will travel to the area of two fires on Sunday. One in Ourense, in Galicia (16,000 hectares destroyed, according to the local authorities), the other in Leon (almost 38,000 hectares affected according to the map of the European Forest Fire Information System). 12 roads remain blocked, as well as the railway line between Madrid and Galicia.

The emergency services in Galicia sent alert messages to the population of ten localities, asking people to close in houses: “In the context of expanding fires, avoid any unnecessary travel and stay in the houses.

Nearly 3,500 UM military (emergency military unit) were sent to the areas where the fires are large.

The regional president of Galicia, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, has requested that several regional units of UM be made available to the affected regions.

And Extramadura made an official request for reinforcements from the central government, in a country where fire extinguishing is, in principle, within the competence of the regions, the central government intervening only in the case of high disasters.

The region also requested the reactivation of the European Civil Protection Mechanism – by which it received two Canadair aircraft for fire extinguishing – requesting 100 fire cars, 10 light helicopters and 10 amphibious helicopters. Spain will remain under the heat, until Monday, so the risk of outburst new fires remains high.

According to Effis, from the beginning of 157,000 hectares, they have been affected by vegetation fires.
