The Russian Language Institute named after Vinogradov RAS approved two acceptable writing options: “Million” – “Millon” and “billion” – “Miliard”, RBC reports. The new dictionary is published on the website of the Vinogradov Institute.

It is also permissible to form derivative forms from these words: “millionnic” – “millennium”, “billionth” – “miliary” or “half a million” – “half a million” and “half a billion” – “half a billion”.

The compilers of the dictionary noted that it fixes the spelling norm, and also excludes dialectisms, jargonisms, obsolete and offensive words. Earlier, words like “Powerbank”, “Smuzi” and “Tiktoker”, as well as some words related to a military operation, were included in the dictionary.

Updated: HMaria Kalenchuk, who was a leader of the phonetics department, compiler of the Orthoepic Dictionary of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), denied this information, RBC reports. The scientist explained that the above facts were taken from the spelling dictionary of the Russian language. The pronunciation standards are established by another dictionary – orthoepic, and there these options are given as obsolete, the specialist concluded.
