In the coming weeks, the assumptions of new regulations will be presented regarding the imposition of an additional amount of tax to the banking sector – announced the Minister of Finance and Economy Andrzej Domański. He emphasized that at the moment he would not be clearly advocated or against digital tax.

This is the third new tax that is talked about in public space today: after packaging fee and digital tax.
The Minister of Finance and Economy Andrzej Domański was asked on Wednesday at Polsat News about the introduction of tax on extraordinary profits of the banking sector postulated by some politicians.
– I announced work that is currently underway in the Ministry of Finance, on a tax that would incur the banking sector. (…) We will inform you already in the coming days, weeks about the solution that we are currently working in the Ministry of Finance – said the minister.
He added that the provisions designed by the Ministry of Finance assume the imposition of “an additional amount of tax on the banking sector”.

– We know that the banking sector currently has very high profits. These profits are the result of high interest rates by the National Bank of Poland, (…) and therefore profits appear there, which at lower percentage rates simply would not occur – he emphasized.
The minister also reported that work on the budget for 2026 is underway, and the bill is to be presented by the end of August. – All fiscal solutions, including the banking sector, will be presented so far – he said.
Domański was also asked about the proposal of the Ministry of Digitization regarding the introduction of digital tax, according to which tax would pay companies with global revenues above EUR 750 million.
– I am in favor of Polish companies to have fair conditions of competing with their foreign rivals, because it is often competition, but I will not be unambiguously in favor of or against this tax at the moment. For me, as I said, it is very important that all the solutions that our government introduces, helping Polish companies, help in such an honest business – said Domański.
He emphasized that this is a project that in his opinion has both economic and political weight. – And that's why I think it should be considered on the government with full seriousness and realizing all the consequences that they may involve. (…) Our relations with the United States at the moment, these economic and commercial relations are very good. At the same time, of course, we realize that it is always worth looking for income for the budget – the minister emphasized.
Domański informed in June that the Ministry of Finance was working on tax on interest on the mandatory reserve kept by banks at the NBP. At that time, the minister pointed out that the budget revenues in 2026 could reach PLN 1.5-2 billion in this respect. (PAP)
