The stake of the PSD meeting for Monday: the postponement of the elections for the City Hall. The leaders in the country, disturbed by the Tandem USR-Nicușor Dan | source

PSD leaders will meet on Monday to decide the future of the ruling coalition. Social Democrats want to stay in power, but try to postpone the elections for the Capital City Hall until next spring, political sources say.

The PSD is preparing for Congress, and in the fight for Bucharest, the formation has neither candidate, no high chances of victory, so it would be an image problem for the future president with full powers of the PSD. The leaders of the party in the territory are unhappy that the PSD, although it is the largest party in the coalition, is eclipsed by the partnership between President Nicușor Dan, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and USR, the sources quoted.
The PSD leadership will meet on Monday to analyze how the ruling coalition operates, after the USR opposed the state to impose national mourning on the day when former President Ion Iliescu was buried. Beyond the symbolic dispute related to Ion Iliescu, the PSD leaders are disturbed by the partnership between President Nicușor Dan, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and USR ministers, sources from the party leadership.
“We are the largest party in the coalition, but in reality we are the fifth wheel in the path of government: we will settle the diminution of pensions, money for mayors we do not receive, we also lose functions of prefects plus other agencies in favor of the USR. It's a great gratitude in the party”, Explains one of the PSD vice -presidents.
The PSD leaders were disturbed by the understanding between Nicușor Dan and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan on the unique candidate of the right at the City Hall. At this moment, the former USR leader Cătălin Drulă is favorite for the position of general mayor, supported by PNL and USR. Thus, the two parties, supported informally and by President Nicușor Dan, would have very high chances to impose the future mayor of the Capital.
“PNL has the prime minister. USR would have the president and the general mayor. The UDMR has the judge who decides the majority at the RCC. In addition, Nicușor Dan will also appoint the heads of secret services. What do we have? The head of the Chamber of Deputies, for Sorin Grindeanu, and a few ministries, but for nothing we have if we do not deliver anything for our electorate”, I say the sources in the PSD leadership.
Therefore, PSD leaders would like to push the elections for the Capital City Hall next spring. The stake: to pass the internal elections in the party. Given that the PSD Congress will be organized in the fall, the party leaders calculate that a defeat of the PSD candidate for Bucharest would become a millstone for the future president with full powers of the party.
At this moment, the PSD does not have a candidate for Bucharest. Daniel Băluță, the mayor of Sector 4, refuses to apply, being unhappy that he lost the race for the interim head of the PSD in front of Sorin Grindeanu. And Gabriela Firea is not desired by the current leadership of the party, given that she comes after two defeats in the last five years.
