He noted that his administration has been cooperating with both countries for some time. On Friday, Alijew and Paszynians in the White House are to participate in the signing ceremony of the peace agreement. The United States will also sign two -sided economic agreements with Azerbaijan and Armenia to “fully unlock the potential of the South Caucasus region,” Trump announced.
The president estimated that it would be a “historical day for Armenia, Azerbaijan, the USA and the world.”
Conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan
In March 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed the content of the peace agreement. The conflict between these neighboring countries has intensified since both independence after the collapse of the USSR, i.e. from the beginning of the 1990s.
It results, among others from the historical and geographical obstacles of the Armenian and Azerbaijanic population. After the last installments of the war in 2020 and 2023, Azerbaijan regained control over the mountain karabakh, an isolated region, in the light of international law, in the territory of Azerbaijan, but inhabited until last year mainly by the Armenian population. Until the Azerian offensive in 2023, there was an unrecognized republic, supported by Armenia.
