US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that “we still have a lot of things to do” before a possible high level meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to end the Ukraine war, news.ro.
“Today (Wednesday – no) was a good day, but we still have a lot of work. There are still a lot of obstacles to overcome and we hope to do this in the next few days and hours, maybe weeks,” Rubio told Fox Business.
“The president wants to end the war,” Rubio said.
“We will have discussions with our European allies and Ukrainians in the coming days to see what progress we can do. And then, we hope, things will continue to progress and there will be an opportunity very soon for the president to meet with both Vladimir Putin and with President Zelenski, at one point, we hope in the near future.”
“But, obviously, many must happen before this can be achieved,” said the US Secretary of State.
Following a qualified visit as “extremely productive” by his special envoy to Moscow, Steve Witkoff, the US president told several European leaders on Wednesday that he wants to meet Vladimir Putin, perhaps even next week, and then organize a three meeting with the Ukrainian president, The New York Times and CNN.
According to the information published in the US press, the White House clarified that the US president was declared “open” at a meeting with Vladimir Putin, as well as with Ukrainian president Volodimir Zelenski.
“The Russians have expressed their desire to meet President Trump, and the president is open to a meeting with both President Putin and President Zelenski. President Trump wants this brutal war to end,” said Karoline Leavitt, the spokesman of the White House.
