Former President Klaus Iohannis transmitted, after the death of Ion Iliescu, a message stating that his mandates as head of state “had a significant impact on Romania”. This is Iohannis's first public message after resigning from the position of president.

“The first elected president of post-December Romania, Ion Iliescu, has passed away today. His mandates of president had a significant impact on Romania. I send condolences to his wife and close ones! God forgive him and rest him!”, Klaus Iohannis said, in a message.
The last message of the former president sent public was on February 10, on his Facebook page, on the day he resigned. On February 12, Klaus Iohannis handed over the mandate and left the Cotroceni Palace.
Ion Iliescu died on Tuesday at the age of 95. The former head of state was admitted since June at the Emergency Clinical Hospital “Prof. Dr. Agrippa Ionescu”, being diagnosed with lung cancer.
His health has begun to deteriorate from Saturday.
Ion Iliescu will be buried on Thursday, August 7, when it will be a national mourning day. The burial ceremony of the former president will only take place in the presence of family and close persons.
