Several cities in eastern Australia have been covered by the thickest layer of snow in recent decades, given that the extreme weather has hit the region this weekend, reports Reuters.
A cold air front brought up to 40 cm of snow on Saturday in some parts of the northern New South Wales, the largest amount recorded in the mid -1980s, said Miriam Bradbury, a meteorologist at the Australian Meteorological Service.

The snow has also settled in areas of the neighboring state for the first time in the last 10 years.

The extreme weather caused floods, blocking vehicles and interrupting the power supply of thousands of homes.
The southern hemisphere is now in the cold season, but snow is rarely encountered in Oceania.
Bradbury says that climate change has made the weather in Australia more unstable in recent years, but the phenomenon has been in history several times.

“What makes this unusual event is the large amount of snow, but also its stretch, which covers a large part of the Nordic Plateau,” explained the meteorologist.
While torrential rains were hitting other areas, the emergency service of New South Wales said that over 100 vehicles were stuck due to snow, buildings were damaged and several major flood warnings were issued.
The New South Wales police, the most populated Australian state, said that a car was stuck in the waters, and a passenger of about 20 years was taken by the flood and is missing.
