Petru Farago (UDMR) was appointed as deputy secretary general of the Government, with the rank of Secretary of State, according to a decision published on Friday in the Official Gazette. The position of deputy secretary general in the structure of the General Secretariat of the Government, which deals with the approval of the projects passing through the executive or budgets, is a new one, following the decision of the current PSD-PNL-UR-UDMR governing coalition.

Petru Farago, 48, is the president of the UDMR County Organization. He has had two deputy mandates, starting in 2016. He applied in 2024 for a new term, but he was not elected.

The government announced on Thursday that it has approved the decision that amends the management structure of the General Secretariat of the Government, by transforming a Secretary of State into a position of Deputy Secretary General of the Government, with the rank of Secretary of State.

“The modification does not lead to the increase of the number of functions with public dignity in the SGG, nor does it involve additional budgetary expenses, the payroll level of the two functions being similar, and the classification being realized strictly within the limit of the allocated annual budgetary provisions. SGG will be provided by the Secretary General of the Government, with the rank of minister, three deputy general secretaries, with the rank of Secretary of State, and a Secretary of State ”, the Government said.

How to change the structure of the General Secretariat of the Government

The change comes after “a month ago it was decided to have the PSD to have the Secretary General, and PNL, USR and UDMR have deputy general secretaries in the SGG, but the measure has been postponed,” sources from HotNews.ro said.

Currently, the General Secretariat of the Government is led by a Secretary General (Radu Oprea – PSD) and has two positions of deputy secretary general, occupied by Adrian Țuțuianu (PSD) and Cristina Traila (PNL).

In addition, there are two positions of state secretaries, of which is only one occupied, in the person of Alexandru Vasilescu (in a PSD allocated position).

In order to respect the understanding in the coalition, political sources from the Social Democrats camp say for HotNews.ro, PSD will remain with the position of Secretary General, occupied by Radu Oprea, but Adrian Țuțuianu will have to leave the position of deputy secretary general. He will take over the only position of Secretary of State occupied in the SGG, respectively will be appointed instead of Alexandru Vasilescu, sources from the Social Democrats camp say.

USR and UDMR call people for the other two positions of deputy general secretaries.

Therefore, according to the changes, the structure of the General Secretariat of the Government will be as follows:

  • Secretary General of the Government – PSD, Radu Oprea
  • Deputy Secretary General – PNL, Cristina Traila
  • Deputy Secretary General – USR, a appointment is to be made
  • Deputy Secretary General – UDMR, who named Petru Farago
  • Secretary of State – PSD, Adrian Tuțuianu
