On August 1, a day off from work? Current status of the National Day of Remembrance for the Warsaw Uprising

Or on August 1, the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising can become A day off from work? The Sejm Petition Committee sent a desiderate in this matter to the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy (MRPiPS).
For several years on August 1, it has been formally a state holiday – the National Day of Remembrance for the Warsaw Uprising. However, it is not a day off from work.
In April 2025, the Sejm petition committee considered another petition in this matter. The authors of the document argued that giving the status of a day off on August 1 “will serve reflection on historical events”, and “strengthen the sense of national unity”. They also emphasized that the day off would allow more Poles to participate in the celebrations and commemorate the heroism of the insurgents – writes the local government portal.
However, sentences in this matter remain divided. The Expertise Office and the assessment of the effects of regulation expressed the opinion that the introduction of the next day off is not necessary, indicating the negative economic effects.
August 1 free of work? The case went to the government
During the meeting of the committee, MP Marcin Józefaciuk proposed a referral to the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy to make the ministry take a position on this matter.
Zenon Knight, a representative of the ministry, pointed out, however, that the ministry is in favor of maintaining the current number of 14 days off from work, which has recently been increased by Christmas Eve on December 24.
One of the heads in this department Zenon Knight said it would happen. “But we would rather be in favor of leaving the current catalog of public holidays covering Sundays and these holidays, which are currently 14 after adding Christmas Eve” – he assessed.
August 1, 2025 is not a day off from work
Although on August 1, 2025, it falls on Friday, which could mean another long weekend, the lack of actions from the ministry ruled out the introduction of changes in the near future. The decision to establish a day off would require passing through the full legislative process – from the Sejm, to the Senate, to the signature of the President of the Republic of Poland.
What's more, the recent inclusion of Christmas Eve in the catalog of non -working days further reduces the chances of expanding the list at August 1. Although there is still a lot of time for any changes before 2026, signals from the ministry suggest that the status quo will remain unchanged.
