“Natural”, “farm”, “without GMO”: how we are foolishly dug in the products and what is hidden behind their composition

Grocery labels sometimes resemble a puzzle. Behind familiar words, undesirable components are often hidden. This was reported by “Belnovosti” (18+).

Only one who knows how to read between the lines really controls what he puts in a plate.

Flavors and sweeteners

The wording “natural flavor” does not always mean natural origin. Up to a third of such substances are synthetic compounds, including solvents and artificial media. And behind the promise “without sugar” can be hidden by aspartam or sucolosis. These sweeteners, affecting the intestinal microflora with regular use.

Yogurts, bread and oils

“Fruit yogurt” is often based on cheap apple puree, while real fruits in it are no more than 7%. Bread with the inscription “whole grain” is sometimes only tinted with caramel, and the whole grain makes up the meager part of the composition. Under the guise of “light” olive oil, a mixture of refined oils of far from Extra Virgin can be sold.

Protein, cholesterol and farming

The inscription “Source source” does not guarantee its digestibility at all. Most often it is cheap soy isolated, poor in amino acid composition. The “without cholesterol” mark on vegetable oils is a deception, because cholesterol is contained only in animal products. And “farmer cheese” can well be made at the factory, since GOST does not prohibit the use of this name subject to classical technology.

Juices and GMOs

Sometimes “direct spin juice” is restored from a concentrate seasoned with a flavor. And the note “without GMOs” flaunts even on water and salt, technically unmodified products. This is just a way to raise the price.
