Prosecutors of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) officially announced on Tuesday evening that ANPC president Cristian Popescu Piedone was placed under judicial control for 60 days and has a prohibition to exercise his position, in the case in which he has warned a hotel in Sinaia that he was going to carry out a control there.

The investigators note in the ordinance that, on March 7, Cristian Popescu Piedone, as president of the ANPC, disclosed to a representative of a trading company that manages a hotel in the city of Sinaia that its subordinates are to carry out a thematic control at its company, as well as the objectives of the control.
Thus, according to prosecutors, Piedone allowed the hotel representative to access this information, in order to obtain undue benefits by the economic operator, consisting of avoiding sanction for the irregularities found in the field of consumer rights.
“Specifically, the defendant Cristian Victor Popescu Piedone would have taught the representative of the respective hotel how to arrange the kitchen and the rooms that were to be verified by the ANPC officials. After this information, in order to prevent the application of sanctions and to order corrective measures by the civil servants, What was to be carried out by the legislation specific to the protection of consumers.
“Following the control, the accommodation unit was not sanctioned by the ANPC representatives and, at the same time, the hotel representatives were congratulated by the defendant Popescu Cristian Victor Piedone for the exemplary way of carrying out the activity,” the prosecutors say.

Cristian Popescu Piedone denied the accusations made by DNA on Tuesday, but acknowledged that he is friends with the owner of the hotel.
