A new scandal in the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), this time associated with allegations of sexual harassment, hit the group of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez during attempts to alleviate the recent corruption scandal in his immediate surroundings.
“I stand here with a heavy heart, but unmoved determination,” said Sanchez on Saturday during the meeting of the PSOE Federal Committee, convened after the outbreak of the corruption scandal in the immediate vicinity of the head of the government.
It is primarily about his close associate Santos Cerdan, accused, among others for participation in a criminal group dealing with manipulating tenders for public works. On Monday, the Supreme Court judge decided to detain Cerdan's detention on remand, without the possibility of dismissal.
Saturday's congress of the PSOE Federal Committee was to be the answer of Sanchez to the scandal; The prime minister previously announced control and personnel changes in the party, but refused to write accelerated parliamentary elections.
The sanation attempt in PSOE was, however, overshadowed by another scandal, which was written on the eve of the congress Eldiario.S. Francisco Salazar, one of the leading party members, was accused by several party friends of “improper behavior”.
After the accusations, Salazar resigned from party functions and those in the prime minister's administration, and PSOE announced an investigation into his case. As the group pointed out, she has not had any signals in this matter so far.
As a result of the corruption scandal, the Sanchez Party has noted decreases in support in the polls, which have been unheard of since the last parliamentary elections, losing about 6-8 percent points to the opposition PPS (PP). The next parliamentary elections are to be held only in 2027.
Despite the rejection of the script by Sanchez, the previous parliamentary elections in PSOE itself are heard voices calling for the government to vote on a vote of trust, to which he called, among others The head of the autonomous community of Castile-la Mancha Emiliano Garcia-Page.
