The Russians are not easy. The internet is most often blocked in the world

Russia is a “world record holder” in terms of blocking internet connections. Only in June the internet was blocked there in varying degrees 655 times – the independent Russian portal Moscow Times said on Tuesday, citing project analysis at the holidays.

This is more than twice as much as noted throughout 2024 in all other countries in the world, where 296 exclusions occurred – the website noted. In May in Russia, the Internet was blocked 69 times.

The internet is switched off, in addition to blocking access to entertainment content, also affect processes in other areas of life. It is more difficult to order a taxi, pay at the ticket office, send documents. Enterprise logistics is disturbed. Each day with blocked internet brings losses in Russia reaching tens of billions of rubles – noted the portal based on the estimates of the Internet Protection Society.

A rapid increase in the frequency of blockades took place in the spring of 2025 in connection with Ukrainian drone attacks. The Internet is disturbed to prevent drone operators navigation and sending intelligence.

At the same time, the authorities of some regions admitted that network blockades do not always occur due to drone attacks. Law enforcement and internet providers assess the “operational situation” and make decisions on restrictions based on it.

In June, the blockade of mobile connections took place every day in dozens of regions of the country. In some parts of Russia there was no connection for a week or longer – the portal emphasized. (PAP)
