The city wants to buy the Pope's family home. “We can use this moment”

The first American pope was born in Chicago in 1955, but he was growing up in Dolton, where he attended mass to the church of St. Mary of the Assemption and to a nearby primary school. Later he studied theology and taught in local Catholic schools. Today, his former house attracts the faithful from all over the country.
The mayor of Dolton Jason House called the purchase of a house “an opportunity that happens once in his life”, pointing to the historical houses of popes, which were transformed into museums or pilgrimage. Despite the enthusiasm of the authorities, some of the inhabitants expressed skepticism in connection with the serious financial problems of the village.
The city is struggling with debts
The AP agency points out that Dolton is struggling with debt of $ 3.65 million. And almost empty bank accounts. Residents are afraid that the village will not be able to cover the purchase costs or take care of the surroundings of the house, especially in the context of allegations of incorrect financial management by the mayor of Tiffany Henyard.
House tries to dispel doubts. He ensures that the repair of local roads will be a priority and the purchase process is to be completed within two weeks. As he argued, the acquisition of the property by the community would bring more benefits than selling its private investors.
“We can either use the moment that carries the potential for the future, or let the house go into the hands of the investor. I would like our community to take advantage of this opportunity” – argued the mayor.
Council members share this view, comparing the potential of the undertaking with the benefits of selling the houses of Michael Jackson or Martin Luther King Jr.
