The German parliament is offered to create a “nuclear umbrella” for all Europe

According to a German politician, Europe should become capable of deterrence due to a potential threat. He added that “for this, in particular, American atomic bombs are located in Germany, but this is not enough in the long term.”

SPPA noted that now there are obstacles in the way of joint use of nuclear weapons. According to the parliamentarian, France is unlikely to agree to transfer access to its nuclear weapons. In this regard, the SPA proposed to develop a system for transmitting control over European nuclear weapons by NATO members by random principle. This approach, in his opinion, will allow you to leave a potential opponent of Europe in bewilderment regarding who exactly can inflict a nuclear blow to him.

Another option, which was proposed by the head of the XDS/CSS faction, is to develop a new pan -European nuclear weapon, which will belong to all European countries included in the NATO block. RPPA noted that Germany in this process should play the role of a leader.

Context

In the world, nuclear weapons have nine states-the USA, the aggressor country of Russia, Great Britain, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel. Almost 90% of the total nuclear weapons – in the Russian Federation (5580 nuclear warheads) and the USA (3748 warheads).

In March 2024, the illegitimate president of the aggressor of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin said that from the military-technical point of view of the Russian Federation, the Russian Federation is ready for a nuclear war, and its strategic forces “are constantly in a state of combat readiness”.

On February 24, 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron said France is ready to use his nuclear deterrence for Europe. Lithuania Prime Minister Gintoutas Palutskas replied that the ability of France to guarantee a “nuclear umbrella” for Europe is now “weak”, although he called this idea “interesting”.

On March 12, Polish President Andrzej Duda urged the United States to transfer nuclear weapons to Polish territory as a holding factor against probable Russian aggression.

On March 14, Lithuania Minister Doville Shakaline said that the country can change the constitution in order to place nuclear weapons.

On March 23, Financial Times wrote that many years of the country kept the “nuclear umbrella” from this step, which the United States provided its allies. However, the turn of the US President Donald Trump towards Moscow and his sharp neglect of NATO prompted the old allies to think about how to prepare for the probable liquidation of the US nuclear shield.
