In 2025, toxicologists of the Krasnoyarsk BSMP registered only 2 cases of hospitalization of patients after a snake bite. Both patients are already healthy. The factory for patients with acute poisoning, the toxicologist-resuscitator Tatyana Shivrina dispelled 5 myths about the consequences of snake bites.
The expert denied that there are more bitten people. According to Tatyana Shivrina, over 30 years of her medical practice, the number of patients with snake bites practically does not change. Cases of attacks on people remain at the same level. In most cases, the victims themselves provoke reptiles – they pick up, try to take pictures, poke them with sticks. Only a small part of the patients tells that it accidentally stepped on the snake.
Another myth is a bite of vipers or a thyroid gland is deadly. Tatyana Shifrina said that snakes living in Siberia rarely cause serious consequences. In her practice, there was not a single case of the patient's death after the bite of these types of snakes.
The doctor also denied that after the snake’s bite, it is necessary to suck the poison or cure the wound with hot iron.
“One and the other folk method are ineffective, moreover, they can do even more harm. When sucking the poison, it quickly enters the bloodstream, since in the oral cavity high absorption of substances. As a result, general toxic manifestations can arise for life: from swelling of the mucous membrane and respiratory impairment to a shock state, ”said Tatyana Shivrina.
But with iron cauterization is fraught with the fact that an additional infection may fall into the wound.
In addition, Tatyana Shivrina dispelled the myth that with a bite, it was urgent to impose a tourniquet.
“Firstly, the poison of vipers and the shields for the shield does not have a general toxic effect. After the bite, we see local manifestations: if a finger is injured, then the edema can be limited only to it or the hand. But the poison is not absorbed into the blood. Secondly, a person who does not know how to properly apply a tourniquet can disturb the bloodstream in the limbs below his application. This is fraught with necrosis of the tissue, ”said the toxicologist-resuscitator.
The doctor shared that the victim may refuse the emergency room in the introduction of serum after the bite of the snakes. According to Tatyana Shivrina, she is not necessary. Moreover, the risk of health from the introduction of serum with antibodies is much higher than the benefits of it. There are many contraindications for the use of the drug. He can even cause anaphylactic shock. The introduction of serum is justified only if a person has bitten a deadly dangerous reptile. Such live in Central Asia.
