Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his American counterpart Donald Trump told him he would participate in potential peace discussions between Ukraine and Russia leaders in Turkey, if Russian President Vladimir Putin will agree. Meanwhile, the Kremlin announced on Thursday that there have been no progress on establishing a data for the next round of peace negotiations with Ukraine, Interfax news agency, quoted by Reuters and News.ro, reported.
In his return flight from NATO Summit, where he met Trump for the first time since his return to the White House, Erdogan said he told the US president that Ankara aims to bring Russian and Ukrainian leaders to Turkey for peace discussions.
“He (Trump) said:” If Russian President Vladimir Putin comes to Istanbul or Ankara for a solution, then I will come, “said Erdogan, quoted by his press office. “We will have the necessary contacts and, with the will of God, we will make this meeting as soon as possible,” the Turkish president promised.
The Kremlin said on Thursday that there have been no progress on establishing a data for the next round of peace negotiations with Ukraine, according to Interfax. For her part, the Russian Tass agency quoted the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, saying that Russia is in favor of continuing American mediation efforts.
Resuming negotiations after a break of over three years, Russia and Ukraine had face -to -face discussions in Istanbul on May 16 and June 2, which led to a series of prisoners and to return the bodies of the dead soldiers. However, there was no progress in the direction of a cease of fire, for which Ukraine, with the support of the West, has put pressure.
