Hand luggage by law, not a commodity. The EU is pushing the nose to the aerial lines

No more measurement of a centimeter of suitcases, quite a few sisers depending on the airline and Basta with subsidies calculated just before the start – the European Union revolutionizes sky travels, determining the dimensions of free hand luggage at 55x40x20 cm and 7 kg of weight.

Pursuant to the draft regulation of the European Parliament Transport and Tourism Committee, the possibility of bringing Hand luggage with dimensions of 55x40x20 becomes the right of passengers. This size goes significantly above those offered by cheap airlines (e.g. for a larger suitcase from the regulation in Ryanair or Wizzair, you had to pay additionally, but their hand luggage, although smaller, may be heavier, because 10 kg. Achieving this weight according to some passengers would require taking several laptops and … stones).

Article 11a of the Regulation of the Transport and Tourism Committee clearly stipulates that

The passenger has the right to have a hand luggage with dimensions of at least 55x40x20 cm and a mass of 7 kg.

And in addition, “carriers cannot charge any additional fees or subsidies for ticket prices from the passenger.

This is the response to sometimes absurd behaviors of low -cost airlines, which have recently activated in strict compliance with internal regulations regarding luggage. They strictly warned that the passenger would bring only one backpack or suitcase, and the wheels protruding at least a little from sizers cost dearly (or were broken by tourists at airports).

Of course, the airlines themselves protest the loudest. The Airlines 4 Europe Association, which includes Ryanair, Lufthansa, Easyjet and others, published a message in which they refer to freedom of choice. In their opinion, top -down determining the dimensions of hand luggage deprives tourists of the opportunity to make decisions for which services they want to pay.

What next? A mandatory popcorn and a drink included in the price of a cinema ticket? The European Parliament should allow passengers to decide – they argue.

At the same time, they point out that this solution will result in a drastic increase in ticket prices.

Legislative track of hand luggage

The proposal of the Transport and Tourism Committee will now go to the European Parliament.

In the event of adopting the regulation, the negotiations of the EU Council and the European Commission will start. These can take up to several months.

When they end up developing a consensus, they will again go to the European Parliament, in which the deputies will vote again whether they accept them or reject them.
