Who is Anduril, the company that has become worth $ 30 billion through the development of drones and rocket engines, based on AI technologies. What are the plans for Europe

10 years ago it would have been inconceivable for a startup to compete with large defense companies and produce high-performance drones and other high-tech military systems. Things have changed, and a high-tech profile defense company, named Anduril Industries, not only obtained a lot of contracts with the Pentagon, but also extends to Europe. How did it succeed and why artificial intelligence plays an essential role?

A huge technological leap in just eight years

Anduril Industries was established in 2017 and specialized in defense systems based on artificial intelligence, autonomous drones and advanced sensors.

In just eight years, Anduril has gained several contracts with the Pentagon, including the development of an autonomous fighter aircraft, named Fury, recently presented at the Aeronautical Salon at Le Bourget.

Anduril has close ties with financiers and advisers in the field of President Donald Trump and the advantage of the company is that it can produce various weapons, but also defense systems, at much lower prices and much shorter than the giants of the defense industry.

In recent years, the company has obtained contracts totaling over two billion dollars from Pentagon.

Anduril has been successful because it has chosen a different strategy compared to traditional defense giants, who often work with long development cycles. The company has adopted a model similar to Silicon Valley startups, quickly developing their own technologies and providing complete solutions (hardware + software), at much lower prices than large, consecrated companies.

Due to an investment of $ 75 million, announced at the end of 2024, Anduril can double the production of rocket engines in the factory in the US Mississippi state, bought in June 2023, reaching a production of over 6,000 units per year.

Anduril is evaluated at $ 30 billion, after receiving $ 2.5 billion funding in June.

Anduril announced on June 18, an agreement with the German giant of Rheinmetall Defense, for the development and production in Europe, along with local partners, two armament systems: Barracuda cruise missile and Fury fighter drone, adapted to the digital platform of the German group. The agreement also provides for “exploring the possibilities of using solid fuel rocket engines in Europe”, says in a statement.

Through this agreement, Anduril and Rheinmetall become direct rivals of European players such as Airbus, Dassault Aviation or MBDA

Anduril and his systems Ai

Why is Anduril Industries considered a force on AI technologies? Its autonomous combat systems work largely on the basis of AI, because autonomous attack and supervision drones are capable of detecting, pursuing and choosing targets, without constant human control.

AI also based on its automatic defense systems, those that analyze real -time data from sensors, to react to various ways of threats.

Anduril has also developed autonomous surveillance towers that are used on the US and Mexico border to automatically detect suspicious movements, based on algorithms.

Anduril also develops software solutions that integrate sensors, drones, radars, rooms, satellites-everything in a common interface, and the company uses artificial intelligence for analysis and rapid decision, suggesting operators or activating automatic reactions.

Plans for Europe are more complex. Anduril Industries considers the manufacture of drones in the UK and collaborating with other European weapons manufacturers to obtain contracts, in the context in which the continent is preparing to increase their defense expenses.

The company plans to invest nearly a billion dollars to set up a factory in the US state, a unit intended for the construction of autonomous armament systems.

The company was founded by Palmer Luckey, a famous virtual reality entrepreneur. He created Oculus VR in 2021, and the company was bought by Facebook in 2014, for two billion dollars.
