Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed support for the right of self-defense of Israel in the Middle East conflict, the German DPA agency reports on Saturday.
“If some are allowed to say that they want to erase the state of Israel from the face of the Earth, then Israel must be able to defend themselves,” said Angela Merkel in an interview given to the regional daily Neue Osnabrücker, cites Agerpres.
The former head of the German government has been asked if Israel's actions respect international law. “If the existence of a country is questioned by Hamas or Iran, it is not so clear to answer this according to international law,” said Angela Merkel.
Instead, she said the situation in Ukraine is absolutely clear. “The attack by Russia against Ukraine is obviously a violation of international law. Ukraine has never threatened Russia and yet it was attacked,” Merkel said.
In the same interview, the former German Chancellor criticized a parliamentary motion on migration, a document presented by the party to which he belongs, the Christian-Democratic Union (CDU), and adopted “intentionally” with the help of the far right party for Germany (AFD).
