In the United States, deaths caused by high temperatures have doubled over the past 25 years, even to triple over the next 50 years.

In this context, the health experts quoted by the Daily Mail have provided a number of tips to prevent the effects of the extreme heat. Caffeine, energizing drinks, alcohol and sour juices are not recommended during this period. Why? Because they stimulate the body to produce and eliminate more urine, which can lead to severe dehydration.

Exposure to high temperatures causes fluid loss through perspiration. Also, the blood volume in the body decreases, which affects the kidneys, heart, brain and other vital organs.

This reduces the efficiency of perspiration – which cools the body – and leads to increased internal temperature. This can cause insolation, which is manifested by nausea, vomiting, accelerated pulse, loss of consciousness and, in serious cases, organ insufficiency.

Also, the consumption of high protein foods is not recommended, which naturally raises the body's temperature, as it must consume more energy to digest them.

Instead of coffee, experts encourage inhabitants of hot areas to consume “a lot of water or electrolyte”. The general recommendation is the consumption of at least 2 – 2.5 liters of water daily, the inclusion of a diet rich in juicy fruits that offer an extra hydration, but also to avoid direct exposure to the sun. High water foods are watermelon, berries, watermelon and cucumbers.
