Karol Nawrocki “contrasts”. Loyalty for NATO, skepticism towards the EU

As the newspaper noted, the victory of Karol Nawrocki in the presidential election poses a question about the role of Poland in the European Union, including the further payment of EU funds that were unlocked by Brussels after Donald Tusk came to power.
After winning the opposition in the parliamentary election in 2023, “Europe breathed a sigh of relief” because “it seemed that the country was returning to the right path” – wrote “El Periodico”. “The largest of the EU member states ceased to be a constant problem, constantly conflicted with Brussels” – added in the newspaper.
Nawrocki “contrasts”
However, the presidential election – as the daily assessed – turned out to be a “cold shower for pro -European environments”, whose candidate Rafał Trzaskowski lost to the conservative and Eurosceptic Nawrocki, supported by PiS.
The Spanish daily pointed out that antagonism towards Brussels and Berlin, which is characteristic of the environment of President Elekta, “contrasts with loyalty to NATO”.
“Poland responds to US demands (…) an increase in defense expenditure. Currently, it allocates 5 percent of GDP for this purpose and declares readiness for further growth. It has the largest conventional army in the EU and continues the armament in fear of Putin's imperialism,” El Periodico noted.
In the EU, it is concerned, among others Nawrocki's position on support for Ukraine and close relations with US President Donald Trump.
