Basilisk

This day was popularly dedicated to the Vasilisk – the so -called mythical creature with the head of a rooster, the body and eyes of the toad and the tail of the snake; Sometimes he was depicted in the form of a dragon. It was said that only wormwood and cornflowers will be ugly on this day. “They didn’t sow, they didn’t plow – they waited a terrible day so that the fields did not clog, the cornflowers would not be malady.”

The girls had their own custom. They weaved wreaths from the birch twigs and threw them into the river: if the wreath suddenly drowned, this foreshadowed the misfortune. There were special signs on the crop. So, the mass appearance of gadflies on this day promised, which will grow many cucumbers. Strong dews promised a fertile year.
