People's calendar
Fedot Ovsyanik, seven girls
On this day, seven saints are revered – seven martyrs who suffered for faith in the early 4th century, during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian on Christians.
In Rus', Fedot (Theodota) was revered as an assistant in spring and said: “Fedot will come – the last oak of the sheet will unfold.” The oak was judged by the future crop: “If the crown with the edge is on the oak, you will measure the oats with a tub.” This meant that if the leaves deployed to Fedot Oak, then the crop of spring would be good. If suddenly green leaves began to fall from the oak, it was a bad sign and foreshadowed the hungry year.
In addition to the oak, the hero of this day was Lenon – he was sowed just on Fedot and seven virgins. So they said: “Sow the lonon at the seven olens.”
