The average average life expectancy in Romania is 76 years, increasing compared to 25 years ago when it reached the 70 -year -old threshold, according to Eurostat. Although this value has increased in recent years, our country is still below the EU average and is not found in the top 100, in a ranking made by Voronoi, a mobile platform that offers a selected collection of graphs, maps and infographic.

  • Life expectancy is an essential indicator of the state of health of a population. It reflects the average number of years that a person expects to live, depending on the year of birth and the socio-economic and medical conditions of the respective country.
  • This indicator is influenced by several factors, such as access to medical services, education level, nutrition, working conditions and lifestyle.

Romania has the third lowest life expectancy in the EU, 76.6 years old, according to the latest data presented by the Eurostat Community Statistics Agency.

In 2023, the life expectancy at birth in the European Union was 81.4 years, marking an increase of 0.8 years compared to 2022. After decreased in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, life expectancy reached higher values than in 2019, according to a statement issued in March 2025. This was also the highest registered value since 2002, reflecting a total increase of 3.8 years.

Countries where people live the most

According to the ranking presented by Voronoi, the residents of the state of Monaco have the highest life expectancy, 87 years old, followed by San Marino and Hong Kong (each 86 years old) and Japan, South Korea and Saint Barthélemy (85).

In a situation similar to Romania, an average life expectancy of 76 years, there are EU states such as Latvia, Lithuania or Bulgaria, African states such as the Republic of Green or Morocco, but also one of the most populated countries in the world-Brazil.

Who is at the tail of the ranking

At the tail of the ranking are two African states, Nigeria and Chad, with a life expectancy of 55 years. A difficult situation is also found Lesotho, the Central African Republic and South Sudan – each with 58 years.

In recent years, challenges such as Covid-19 Pandemia, climate change and armed conflicts have affected life expectancy in certain regions, leading to temporary decreases or stagnations, according to the World Health Organization. At the same time, non -transmissible chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer, have become the main causes of mortality, especially in developed countries.
