An American federal court blocked the customs tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, which represents a huge blow to his economic policies.

The Court of International Trade has decided that imposing an emergency law invoked by the White House does not give the president the unilateral authority to impose customs tariffs for almost each country.

The executive orders announcing the rates “are declared invalid as contrary to the law”, wrote a complete judges in the decision of the New York Court where the tariff schemes were challenged.

“The world and reprisal tariff orders exceed any authority granted to the president … to regulate the import through tariffs,” the order shows.

The court also blocked the taxes imposed by the Trump administration of China, Mexico and Canada.

The Trump administration filed a appeal, a spokesman for the White House declaring: “It is not the job of the unlawful judges to decide how to approach a national emergency.”

For judges, the executive orders issued on April 2, which impose a minimum rate of at least 10% on all the products entering the United States and up to 50%, depending on the country of origin, 'exceed the powers granted to the President in the Emergency Economic Response Law (IEEPA) to regulate imports by using customs duties'.

In a written opinion that accompanies the decision, one of the judges, who remained anonymous, estimated that 'an unlimited delegation of the authority in customs taxes would be a renunciation of the legislative power for the benefit of another branch of the Government', which is contrary to the American Constitution.

“EEPA allows the president to adopt the necessary economic sanctions in case of emergency to combat an extraordinary and unusual threat +”, the Court stressed.
