The authorities in Vrancea carry out consolidation works and preventive interventions in several localities exposed to the risk of floods, in the context of hydrological warnings and the possibility of producing an important flood on the Siret River, from Ukraine, Vrancea Prefecture representatives, quoted by Agerpres, reported on Wednesday.

In Mirceşti, it is prepared to install a provisional metal dam, with a length of about 500 meters, made of aluminum panels and waterproof material, to protect the shore and to avoid water flow. Although the locality is known as an area with historical flood risk, at this moment the affected households are not reported.

Problems could arise if the rainfall will continue on Wednesday, and the Siret can reach a flow of about 2,000 cubic meters per second.

“It is possible that in the next 48 hours, following the accumulation of the quantities of water that the siren collects, starting from Ukraine and from the entire river basin, we have a discharge that can reach up to 2000 cubic meters/second. Iorga.

He stressed that, if the flow of Siret will increase suddenly and the discharge temporarily will be blocked, there is a risk that the Putna river could no longer evacuate the waters, which could lead to floods in the low areas.

In order to prevent this situation, controlled spills were made at upstream dams, in collaboration with Hidroelectrica and the Basin Water Administration.

The prefect also stated that, at present, the flows of the rivers in the county are decreasing or stagnation, and the controlled evacuations from the upstream accumulations are carried out to prepare the ability to take over the flood wave. “At Movileni we discharge 1,300 cubic meters per second, and in Călimăneşti 1,200 cubic meters. We make room for the shock wave that can come on Siret,” said Iorga.

Also, in Bilieşti, the authorities intervened for the dismantling of an essential agricultural channel, which takes over the rainwater from the field and directs them to the ANIF channel, crossing the county road and thus reducing the pressure on the local households.

In the Călieni area, the authorities together with the specialists from ISU Vrancea and SGA monitor the critical point where the Putna river flows into Siret. The teams of the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations Vrancea, together with representatives of Hidroelectrica, Romanian waters and local authorities, continue the permanent monitoring of water courses and hydrotechnical infrastructure, being prepared to intervene quickly in case of emergency situations.
