On this day, the memory of Simon Kananit (Zilota) is noted – one of the disciples of Jesus Christ. According to legend, he preached in Judea, Egypt and Libya.
The day of the memory of St. Simon in the People’s Calendar coincided with an older holiday – the name of the mother of the raw land. Russian people looked at Earth with great reverence – as at the nurse of all mankind. On the day of the birthday, she was treated with maximum reverence. The peasants did not take up the plow, nor the harrow, in no case drove stakes into the ground and did not dig pits so as not to break its peace. But to walk on the ground with bare feet was very welcomed – they said that the Earth could share its strength with a person.
At the same time, Simon's Day was considered the best time in Rus' to search for treasures, as well as for collecting medicinal plants, including rooting. In order for them to have proper healing power, they need to collect them skillfully – at a certain time, with the performance of different rites. In particular, before going behind the herbs, a person had to wash carefully and put on pure linen. And some, especially valuable herbs, were supposed to be torn off even with clean hands, but through scarves and towels. In addition, it was supposed to ask the mother raw earth about blessing.
Simon was paid special attention to brooms. There was a sign: if a fresh broom, set by the child’s crib, quickly languidly, then the child was threatened with a disease. In this case, it was urgent to take preventive measures. And the broom suspended on the triber could fall on a man who came to the house with unkind intentions.
