Romania is again in light

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, Romania won the most important fight with it. The battle with their own dark forces, with their own demons. I have witnessed a clash of maximum severity between civilization and the return to a world of explicit emptiness, undisguised fascism, hatred and aggression of all kinds.

Through an exciting mobilizing effort, the Romanians chose the path of common sense and civilization, dialogue, intelligence, chose the European values after which they longed for our parents.

At this poll the large urban areas were the ones that fired Romania from the marsh of aggressive and Grobian populism. The inhabitants of the great cities are the Romanian nuclei that have mobilized exemplary to preserve the buds of economic development and the European road. And he did not do so in vain because, beyond the problem deficit and the threat of Russia, our country will be able to enjoy in the following years of interconnected highways that will also strengthen the social bridges and extend well-being in rural areas.

Now that Romania has chosen to stay in Europe, the main social stake is to build bridges. The main ingredient is communication and opening, but they also need time. After all, we all need something that seems to have been less and less, that is, patience and understanding. Romania needs to reconcile with its own dilemmas, to quench the nerves too tight. We will succeed, it is not easy, the path is long and heavy, but we will succeed.

As in a time that became more and more threatening for the whole of Europe, Romania brought the head in the light of civilization, above the clouds and gave a positive signal for all Europeans who remain loyal to rights and freedoms, civilization and common sense, liberal democracy. Now Romania is an example for other Member States of the European Union in which elections follow.

After six months in which I floated in the uncertainties of the interim and provisional, now I put my feet on the ground, after in the second round of the presidential elections – judging by the difference between the two candidates – David defeated Goliath. The result was so well received that if we read the reactions of the press and European Chancellies the feeling is that Romania gave a good image (and this despite the deplorable impression left by some compatriots who have behaved in this election campaign).

Romania has traveled a long way, we did not get to where we are by chance. Romania has had many moments to buy, but they passed them all. A democracy always implies the effort to preserve it. But now the risk was too high. Golănia and xenophobia, hatred and threats, salvationist mythology and stupid mysticism – all these fascist tentacles – became so dangerous that they had begun to pull the country back. We need to understand now, when we breathe easy, how big the national depression is in which we could have been. And we need to understand that we have to strengthen our economy, yes, but also the rule of law.
