In the referendum, residents dismissed Rupniewska, but the attendance was too low to cancel the city of Zabrze. For this, it was necessary to exceed the attendance threshold of 29.6 thousand. votes.

In order for the results of the referendum to be important, it was necessary to participate in the vote of at least 3/5 of the number of voters who took part in the selection of the city's local government authorities in 2024. The attendance threshold in the case of the president and the city council was different, because the turnout in the first and second round of last year's local government elections was different.
The initiators of the referendum accused Rupniewska, among others group exemptions in local government units, increases in local fees, resignation from organizing cyclical cultural events and the prolonged privatization process of Górnik Zabrze. Rupniewska defended herself against the allegations, indicating, among others that she took over the city in a very bad financial situation and had to save it from bankruptcy.
Rupniewska won the local government elections in Zabrze in 2024 as a candidate KWW Civic Coalition. Although she started with the support of the KO, it does not belong to any political party. In the second round she received 57.85 percent votes. She defeated her long-term predecessor Małgorzata Mańka-Szulik, who managed the city since 2006.
