The road perplexity. How did a search engine rely on $ 14 billion

Classic search engines lose ground in the fight with Chatboţii ai and a name appears more and more often in the landscape dominated by Chatgpt. This is Perplexity AI, an application that, through a well thought out strategy, has become used by tens of millions.
A “response engine” with a lot of you
Perplexity is a reference name among AI applications. Its main product is an “Augment search engine”, also called “Answer Engine). Instead of providing a list of links, the response engine uses artificial intelligence -based language models to analyze the questions formulated in natural language and to provide personalized, enriched links to the sources used. In the mobile application, the chatbot can also respond in Romanian.
Perplexity has set up in 2022, and the search engine was launched at the end of that year. The company is based in San Francisco, and at the end of 2024 it was evaluated at $ 9 billion. Now, after a new round of financing ($ 500 million), the value rose to $ 14 billion (although the initial target was $ 18 billion.
Perplexity has been successful because it focused on offering clear, sources based, has a simple interface, emphasized transparency and has discreet but efficient marketing.
Instead of investing massively in commercials, Perplexity has been based on organic recommendations, supported by satisfied users, tech influences and professional communities. He also earned his reputation by favorable comparisons with other applications.
Perplexity would argue that it has been differentiated from competition through a model of “question-answer” type interaction, offering concise but documented answers, with visible sources. The tactic has added confidence, especially since many “chatbots” hallucinates (give false information).
It also mattered that many well -known investors came with money, a sign that the investment was and is promising.
The company also has more and more business partners, and Bloomberg wrote in April that the assistant could be integrated into Samsung phones, after an agreement has been signed with Motorola.
The company invested: Nvidia, New Enterprise Associates, IVP and Vision Fund 2 of SoftBank, as well as Jeff Bezos, a founder of OpenAi and “heavy” people from Google and Meta. Investments also came from a Samsung fund.
Perplexity had “Contre” with a few media companies, being accused of using the contents produced by them. The company did not choose the fight, but signed partnerships with them, to set up things and for both sides to win. The newest media partnership was signed with Le Monde.
Perplexity strategy is based on partnerships
Perplexity AI has a search chatbot that aims to compete with the products offered by Google and Openai. The Director General, by arranging Srinivas, told the Financial Times last month that Perplexity will need more money to finance future products and to expand its users base.
He said that there are 30 million users on average, but to reach 100 million, not to mention 500 million, big investments are needed to enter the demanding Big Tech Club.
The company has recently launched a way that allows users to give your AI voice commands on Apple devices, such as sending emails or finding videos on YouTube.
Perplexity announced on May 14, a partnership with PayPal, to allow users to make direct chatting. US customers will soon be able to book travelers, buy products and get tickets to concerts, without leaving the platform.
The payments will be made in chat through PayPal or Venmo, and PayPal will handle processing, delivery, tracking and billing. Purchases will be able to be completed with a single click. Perplexity plans to compete with Openai and Anthropic and by offering a “browser agent” called comet. These tools autonomously open a web browser and look online, as a man would, in response to the user's commands.
