US Vice President JD Vance met with European Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen and Italy Giorgia Meloni on Sunday, declaring that this time will help the EU and the United States, writes Reuters.
“Europe is an important ally of the United States, but of course, we have some disagreements, as friends sometimes have, on topics,” said JD Vance, sitting with Ursula von Der Leyen and Giorgia Meloni in Rome, after attending Pope Leon's inaugural service.
“I think we will have an excellent conversation and we hope it will be the beginning of long -term commercial negotiations and long -term commercial advantages for both Europe and the United States,” he added.
The White House has imposed a 25% customs fee for steel, aluminum and car imports, as well as a 10% basic fee for almost all countries, with additional “mutual” taxes – reaching a total of 20% – if negotiations during a 90 -day break fail.
Von Der Leyen said the commercial relationship between the European Union and the United States is the largest in the world and is worth more than 1.5 trillion per year.
She added that the two parties exchanged negotiation documents that outline the different future discussion.
“It is important, now that we have changed documents, for our experts to come in depth, to discuss the details,” she said.
“Everyone knows that the devil is in details, but what unites us is that, in the end, we want to have a good agreement for both parties,” she added.
Von Der Leyen has failed to have an official meeting with US President Donald Trump since he returned to the US Presidency in January, changing only a few words to Pope Francis's funerals last month.
In addition to discussing taxes, she said she also wants to talk to Vance about Ukraine and defense expenses.
