Young spouses Timothy and Moor, whose memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on this day.

In the Russian folk calendar, Mavra acquired several nicknames. The most famous of them is a seedling – speaks for itself. On this day, housewives landed seedlings of cabbage on the beds and sowed gardens with vegetable seeds. Sometimes fresh plantings were sprinkled with holy water to protect plants from caterpillars and aphids.

They adhered to some other beliefs. For example, it was not customary to plant cabbage on Thursday, even if it was a day of the Mavra of the Seatar; It was believed that worries would sharpen her. When transplanting plants, women did not eat bread so that the hens did not hide young shoots.

The day of the Morara was called green cabbage soup because in mid -May they began to cook cabbage soup not from sauerkraut (its reserves ended by this time), but from fresh greenery – sorrel, quinoa, nettles.

Mavra was also called thrush. It was believed that on this day the cows, having eaten fresh and juicy grass, bring the most delicious and thick milk. “And the hostess is easy, since milk on the table,” they remembered such a proverb to Moor.

Watched the signs. Both the big dew and a clear day foreshadowed a good harvest of cucumbers. But the lack of dew promised the rain in the morning.
