EXCLUSIVE. One of George Simion's most important European allies wants to “never get blackmailed by the European Commission and gives an example.” I don't know if you will publish it “

The President of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), the Polish Mateusz Morawiecki, says, in an interview with Hotnews.ro, which are the reasons why he supports George Simion in the Romanian presidential race. The former Warsaw prime minister also comments on the criticisms that are brought to the golden candidate. Poland organizes the first tour of the presidential elections on Sunday, May 18th.
“I am a very powerful supporter of Mr. George Simion,” says ECR leader Mateusz Morawiecki in an interview for the public hotnews.ro, and shows that he and George Simion share the same opinions and are “aligned in thought.”
Morawiecki offered several arguments for which Simion supports the presidential elections.
- “He is not part of the left -wing elites in Romania or Europe.”
- “The Gold Party, as well as Viktor Orban, Giorgia Meloni and my party, are firmly opposed to the liberal elites on the left and the estate, this plutocracy in Brussels.”
- “George Simion, because he understands all the complexities of the economy, all the complexities of the financial world.”
- “George Simion should be very careful with the media, because journalists can be very wicked and not at all objective.”
Mateusz Morawiecki is one of the leaders of the Party Law and Justice (PIS) and was the prime minister of Poland for six years, between December 2017-December 2023. He is also the leader of the Party of European Conservatives (CRE), a conservative European political party, perceived as Eurosceptic and with a platform based on the European Union. Since January 2025, George Simion has been vice president of ECR.
Simion was on Tuesday and Wednesday in Poland to support him in the first round of presidential elections on PIS, Karol Nawrocki. “As a new president of Romania, I will come every day to campaign for Karol Nawrocki,” he said in an election rally in Zabrze. Also in Poland, Simion also met with President Andrzej Duda, to discuss “restoring democracy”. On Tuesday evening, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had published, on Facebook and X, the following message: “Russia is having fun. Nawrocki and his pro-Russian Romanian counterpart George Simion, on a stage 5 days before the presidential election in Poland and Romania. Everything is clear.”
“We have very similar programs”
HotNews.ro: Mr. Mateusz Morawiecki, and Romania, and Poland are preparing for the presidential elections. Here, there are citizens who are afraid of the scenario in which George Simion will be president. You support him. Why do you think leaders like him or you are needed?
Mateusz Morawiecki: George Simion is a member of the leadership of the European Conservatives and Reformists and so I came to meet him. We learned his opinions about the transatlantic unity, about the Polish-Romanian collaboration, about our common interests regarding our western partners of the EU, about Russia, about China, about everything. So I can be sure that we are very lined up in our thinking.
He is not part of the liberal elites on the left in Romania or Europe. He wants to work for the Romanian people, and our programs are very similar. So Romania and Poland can collaborate a lot with each other in the context of our common threats, especially from the Russian direction, but also in the issue of illegal migration, Green Deal or towards the attempts of our western partners of the European Union to take competences, to take powers from the sovereign states. George Simion's party is very sovereign and so is my party, law and justice.
– Poland was and remains a supporter of Ukraine. So does Romania. George Simion, however, pointed out a change in Romania's attitude, including stopping help for Kiev. How do you see these statements?
-From the discussions I had with George Simion, I know that he wants to establish peace between Russia and Ukraine as much as possible. And I know that he is based on direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, with the support of the United States. But the establishment of peace is in the hands of the Ukrainians and the Russians.
Poland is disappointed by … my party and the political group of which I belong are very disappointed by the position of Ukraine towards Poland. For example, the import of cereals from Ukraine to Poland has created big problems. And this is the reason why I imposed an embargo on the Ukrainian cultures and the Ukrainian wheat, even against the will of the European Union.
I do not know the specific situation in Romania, but if it is similar, then I am not surprised that George Simion's position is quite harsh. And that has nothing to do with the fact that Poland supports the Ukrainian army in the battles with Russia.
In Poland, we have the Hub in Rzeszów, in one of our airports, which is the most important weapon transport on Ukraine. I am in favor of maintaining this hub, even though, at the same time, I would also like Ukraine and Russia, with the support of the United States, to negotiate a peace agreement.
– From the statements of Mr. Simion it appears that Romania should not help Ukraine, while Poland is, as you say, very involved in supporting Ukraine …
– We are not involved in any way of sending troops or direct support of Ukraine, to Ukraine. Poland played an essential role in the first 12 months of war, when, under my government, I sent weapons and supported Ukrainian refugees. But at this moment, we are not in favor of sending our troops to Ukraine. And I am not surprised that George Simion does not support the sending of Romanian troops to Ukraine.
“I do not agree with anyone who admires Vladimir Putin”
-George Simion is supported by Călin Georgescu, a politician who expressed his admiration for Vladimir Putin. Do you share this admiration too?
– I don't share any admiration for Vladimir Putin. I do not agree with anyone who admires Vladimir Putin. We know how bad the Soviet Union was and we know what Russia can mean for countries in Eastern Europe. I do not admire anyone who supports Russia, who has positive words to Russia. We have a candidate in the presidential campaign in Poland, who is also pro-Rus and we are very firm against him. Russia threatens Ukraine and this is why we support Ukraine. That's on the one hand.
But, on the other hand, I am very aware of how dangerous the European elites and Establishment (the system, no) can be. Western European countries want to change treaties and want to deprive us of a significant part of our sovereignty. And the Golden Party, as well as Viktor Orban, Giorgia Meloni and my party, are firmly opposed to the liberal elites on the left and the estate, this plutocrat in Brussels. I am an economist. I was Minister of Finance. I was Minister of Economy. I was prime minister. And I know very, very well how Poland and Romania are deprived of our money.
Polish-Romanian project, attacked by France and Germany, the Netherlands and Austria
I can give you an example. I don't know if you will publish this, but I can give you an example. Both Poland and Romania were very successful in creating a very powerful transport sector. And, once Poland and Romania were successful in this regard, France and Germany and the Netherlands and Austria attacked through the European Union, by the European Commission, also attacked our transport sector and the Romanian transport sector. This is a conclusive example of why Poland and Romania should remain together, along with the Visegrad countries. We should work together against any attack on our business, against any attack on our economy.
This is also why I am a very strong supporter and I know that George Simion is a very powerful supporter of the construction of the North-South infrastructure, such as Via Carpathia, such as railway connections, because from here they can benefit the Romanian nation and the Polish nation. This is why I also support George Simion, because he understands all the complexities of the economy, all the complexities of the financial world.
“George Simion should be very careful! Journalists can be malicious and not at all objective ”
– In Romania there are a presidential debate in which the candidates are asked to answer the press questions. Do you think it is their duty to answer questions, no matter how many critics I receive? How would you describe the relationship of a candidate with the media these days?
– Basically, I know the situation of the press in Poland and I can imagine that the left press and the liberal press dominates in Romania as it dominates in Poland. So I do not agree to get in touch with any kind of media, because I know how much propaganda can spread. And it's George Simion's choice with whom he wants to talk. I can only refer to the media situation in Poland. I know that 90% of the media are left and related to the system, addicts to Brussels, addicts to Berlin. For example, the largest portal in Poland is in the hands of the Germans. I do not know the situation in Romania, but if it is similar to the one in Poland, then George Simion should be very careful with the media, because journalists can be very malicious and not at all objective.
– There is a strong criticism in Romania about George Simion's behavior that many describe as violent. Do you think that in heavy struggles in politics, such as a presidential struggle, is it legitimate to sometimes respond with more intensity to criticisms you do not agree with?
– I don't think he reacts with any violence. I am not aware of any accusation, so I cannot comment, but I know George Simion and I know he is a peaceful man.
-What advice would you give to George Simion not to wake up with the EU, the EU funds, as happened in Poland? I mean PNRR funds.– Do not be blackmailed, to fight to the end! To build alliances with other countries, even with the countries you disagree with on some elements, because the European Union cannot be a great mastodon to take the sovereign powers of the Member States! This is the number one point.
Point number two: I fought with the European Union and, finally, during my government, more precisely in August and September 2023, I finally received recovery and resilience funds. So, you might be misled: the fight of the European Commission with my government was only partially successful. But I do not regret this, I fought with them and I was successful in many different aspects. So George Simion, if he will win the presidential election, will never be blackmailed by the European Commission! And we, if we return to power, will support George Simion. And I am sure he will support us, because the European Commission usurp the powers that he does not have, in fact, according to the treaties in Rome and in the treaties of Lisbon.
