The independent candidate for presidential Nicușor Dan explained on Tuesday evening, in the electoral debate from Antena 3 CNN of which George Simion was missing, his position on the introduction of the right to abortion in the Constitution, on the model offered by France so far.
He was questioned on this topic after the answer given in March, during a press conference, stating that in principle he agrees with abortion, however, that “there are shades”.
“Yes, it was not the happiest forms. We have explained this several times, later. We have a law that allows the right of women to abortion, which is very natural, this law also has a limit of the age of the fetus, 14 weeks, and I think it is a correct formula and did not give birth to debates in society, I think it was a law,”
“In my opinion as long as this law at this time does not give birth to debates in society it must remain as it is, if at some point it will be a majority of people who want this to be passed in the Constitution, of course, but for now,” said Nicușor Dan on Tuesday night.
On March 29, Nicuşor Dan was asked by HotNews.ro, in a press conference at his headquarters in the Capital, if abortion could become a constitutional right in Romania.
“Yes, in principle I am for the right of the woman to decide on her own body, but there are of course, shades of the fetus and all this,” said the independent candidate at that time.
The French parliament voted in March 2024 the inclusion of the right to abortion in the Constitution, France becoming the first country in the world that explicitly offers protection for pregnancy in its fundamental law.
In Romania, abortion on request is regulated by law (Criminal Code) and can be requested until week 14 of pregnancy.
