Trump is less popular worldwide than his Russian and Chinese counterparts, Putin and Xi Jinping, according to new data presented by the Democracy Perception Index of 2025. The study centralized attitudes towards democracy, geopolitics and global players, attended by more than 110,000 respondents from 100 countries.

Most of the people surveyed had a general negative perception on the US, marking a significant decrease compared to last year. America's reputation has had a special impact on EU countries, which is not necessarily a surprise, given the war of the US President with the European Block he called “horrible” and “created to deceive the United States.”

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former NATO chief and founder of the Democracy Alliance, who was a co -author of the index, said he was not “surprised that perceptions on the United States have decreased so suddenly. “

The country that took advantage of the decrease in America in popularity is China, which continued to improve its global position, surpassing the US for the first time and registering positive perceptions in all regions, except for Europe. Russia, whose renowned has decreased considerably after the widespread invasion of Ukraine by President Vladimir Putin in 2022, is still less popular than the US, although his image improves.

And Donald Trump's reputation follows the same trend as his country. The survey showed that he is less popular globally than Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping. Trump has obtained the weakest score of a wide range of political, cultural and spiritual leaders, which included Elon Musk, Bill Gates, the deceased Pope Francis, Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian.

Israel – the country with the worst global reputation

According to the survey, Israel is in the last place in terms of the global reputation between the countries included in the survey, especially in the Middle East and South Asia. Israel is unpopular even in the European countries that have been traditional allies, such as Germany, which signals an increasing dissatisfaction with the behavior of the Netanyahu government in Gaza and the Westordania.

Last year, the International Criminal Court (CPI) issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes.

The data used by Polito comes from an online survey conducted by Nira Data and the Alliance of Democations between April 9 and 23, 2025. The sample was 111,273 people from 100 countries, with an average sample dimension of about 1,100 respondents in the country. The national representative results were calculated based on the official age and sex distribution for the population of each country. The index of perception of democracy captures how citizens around the world perceive the fundamental values of democracy, such as the impact of elections, the power of the rule of law and freedom of expression.
