US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he could soon remove sanctions against Syria to enable the country under the leadership of the former jihadist “fresh start”. According to Reuters, the temporary president of Syria Ahmad Ash-Szara offers the construction of the Trump Tower skyscraper in Damascus.

During the press conference, before departure on a journey to Saudi Arabia, the President of the United States said that he talked about Syria with the President of Turkey by Recep Erdogan, and suggested that he would announce the abolition of sanctions existing for years.
“We cooperate with him (Erdogan) a bit, including in the subject of Syria. And by the way we will have to make a decision on sanctions that are very possible that we will soften,” said Trump. “We can remove them from Syria, because we want to enable them to start. President Erdogan asked me, many people asked me for it, because considering the way they are sanctions, this does not give them too good start. So we want to help them” – he added.
New Syrian authorities, including the temporary president Ahmad Ash-Szara, have been striving for the abolition of restrictions for months, a former leader of the jihadist militia of Syrian rebels. As the Reuters agency writes, during a recent meeting with the American right -wing activist Jonathan Bass, Szara was to propose the construction of Trump Tower, cooperation against Iran or arranging relations with Israel.
French President Emmanuel Macron also advocated the abolition of sanctions for Syria during the visit of the Syrian leader in Paris.
According to the agency, it is not excluded that Trump and Asz-Szara will meet on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia, where Trump went on the first planned foreign journey.
American sanctions for Syria have remained in force since 1979, when the Al-Assad regime has been inscribed on the list of terrorism-supporting countries. Since then, additional restrictions were imposed in 2004 and after the outbreak of the civil war in Syria. Despite the overthrow of the previous regime, only part of the restrictions has been lifted so far by the rebels. From the sanction list – still during the rule of Joe Biden – was also written by Szara himself, who was previously considered a terrorist.
Some people in Trump's administration opposed the sanction of sanctions because of the past of the new President of Syria. Public caution in this matter was recommended, among others Vice President JD Vance. Additional conditions needed to abolish sanctions, including getting rid of foreign fighters from positions in the army, have recently been to be erected by diplomats from the State Department and the Ministry of Finance.
