The new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed a reserved optimism on Saturday about a Ukraine's war in the near future, I write DPA and AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

Merz took part on Saturday, in Kiev, at a summit of the countries participating in the “Coalition of Volunteers”, together with the leaders of France, the United Kingdom and Poland, present in the Ukrainian capital, and the leaders of other European countries, participants through video conference.

“This war has to end. And I think the chances are small now. But there is a chance,” he said in an interview for the German ARD.

Friedrich Merz stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin must recognize the uselessness of the war in Ukraine, adding that the European Union is preparing a new package against Moscow.

The countries participating in the “Volunteer Coalition” decided on Saturday “to support a cessation of 30 -day fire with a surveillance provided mainly by the United States and to which all Europeans will contribute,” the French President Emmanuel Macron announced in Kiev.

Regarding this aspect, Friedrich Merz told the television station ZdF that “Putin must know that he cannot divide the West.” “This is the largest diplomatic initiative of recent months, if not in recent years, to end the war in Ukraine,” Merz emphasized.
