The two finalists of the presidential elections in Romania have appeared on the public stage in different ways. Nicușor Dan has been noted since high school, as an international Olympic in mathematics, while George Simion became known by the protest actions of the Unionist movements in the mid -2000s.

The team of the little Einsteini

Born in 1969, in the city of Făgăraș (Brașov county), Nicușor Dan was one of the most award -winning students of the “Radu Negru” High School in the locality.

The educational institution was proud, at that time, with a promotion rate of one hundred percent and with a percentage of over 90% of admission to higher education for students from the math-physical classes-the percentage being lower in the case of the other profiles.

“It should be noted that the student Dan Nicușor, from the 11th grade, framed in the country's mathematics group, together with his other five teammates, was distinguished with the first prize at the Athens Mathematics Balcania and the first prize at the Havana Mathematics World Cup”, The representatives of the high school, in the Transylvania publication, since 1987 showed.

In 1987 and 1988, Nicușor Dan's performance drew the attention of the national press. The Lot of Olympics in Mathematics, of which the teenager was part of the high school, won gold medals both at the International Mathematics Olympiad in Havana (Cuba), in 1987, as well as the following year, organized in Canberra, in Australia. Each time, Nicușor Dan obtained the maximum score, and the Romanian team managed to detach over 40 participating national teams.

One of the first stories in the national press about Nicușor Dan appeared in 1987, after the return of the national lot from the Mathematics Balkan. Flacăra magazine then took the title “Romanian record at the Olympiad of the Little Einsteini”, published by the Greek newspaper, which praised the performances of the Romanian students.

“The little Einsteini of the Balkans (Romanians, mostly), broke all the records at the Mathematics Olympics that took place in Athens. The students in Bucharest, Timișoara and Cluj obtained the highest scores, leaving behind the other delegations,” Etnos wrote.

In an interview subsequently given to the newspaper Argeș, Nicușor Dan, a student in the 11th grade at that time, stated that he owes his passion for mathematics to his teacher in the gymnasium.

But then add that he has a defect. “I am influential. As a proof, I do not like interviews and I have reached the fourth or fifth of my life,” he said, in his adolescence.

After Cuba, medal with gold and in Australia

In the summer of 1988, the team of the Olympic students registered a new international success, ranking second at the International Mathematics Olympiad, held between July 6 and 23, in Australia.
