PSD, drifting before the president's election: no direction and internal dissensions. What chances does the European wave have in the party?

In the middle of the electoral struggle, the PSD is facing one of the most disturbed periods in its recent history: without a clear and grieved direction of internal dissensions, the party seems paralyzed between the post-elegance scenarios and the pressure of a decisive decision for the Presidential Tour.

After finding the results in the first round of the presidential elections 2025, the Social Democratic Party decided not to support any candidate in the second round of the presidential elections, in which Nicușor Dan and George Simion faces. However, from the political formation that remained at the helm of Marcel Ciolacu, despite the failure in two presidential elections, several members were opposed.
Senator Victoria Stoiciu, PSD vice president, voted against the decision not to publicly support a candidate in round II, while the MEP Victor Negrescu, vice -president of the European Parliament, refrained from vote. “I still believe that in such moments there is no place of equivocation or hesitation. The pro-European trajectory of Romania and implicitly Nicușor Dan need a firm support ”explained Victoria Stoiciu on Facebook.
Victor Negrescu, who is also vice-president of the European Parliament and vice-president of the European populations, explained that he respects the party's decision, but believes that the formation must be focused on indicating the pro-European direction. “From the perspective of vice-president of the European Social Democrats, I can only find that the PSD, in the local elections, in the parliamentary elections and in the presidential elections, presented as a pro-European party and consequently it seems natural to us to transmit this signal: not to talk about people, but to talk about the risks of the Western, and what to talk about the Western way, For Romania it represents the correct solution ”, Victor Negrescu indicated in the European Parliament.
In the country, a former PSD minister divided the camps against each other. PSD deputy Adrian Căciu, former Minister of Finance in the Ciuca Government and former Minister of European Funds in the first Ciolacu Government, claimed that the devaluation of Leo would be a consequence of Nicușor Dan's qualification. “If you still do not like it as it was, and some were hated with the good, this is it. We take a break ”Căciu wrote on Facebook.
The pro-European PSD, a minority
The political scientist Cristian Pîrvulescu explained for the “Adevărul” that the pro-European camp in the PSD is a reduced one to the degree of minority, which the members need to keep their appearance a European image, but in reality, the party is broken by this camp.
“It is about minority colleagues. They need them to have an image as European as possible, because the other opportunistic, deideologized leaders are not able to wear a dialogue with European socialists. But the reality of the PSD is that the emperor is empty. There is, in fact, nothing social-democrat in this party, with the exception of these, with the exception of these, A set of values that is deeply European, but which does not find echo in the detection pragmatism of the old guards (…)
The group is very small. So far, special voices have been only Victoria Stoiciu, who is the vice-president of the party, who comes from the world of non-governmental organizations and has been absolutely absurd to be sorosist, of being among Sorosist infiltrations and Negrescu equally. (…) By the way, they were not defended by their colleagues in front of such a lower attack. I do not know if they agreed or not, but they were simply allowed to defend themselves ”explains Cristian Pîrvulescu.
Nicușor Dan's chances at the PSD electorate
The political scientist also pointed out that Nicușor Dan has no chance of attracting an electorate from the PSD electoral basin, which is why a part of the party insisted for a concrete position.
“Theoretically, because in Romania we do not have an ideological confrontation, populism, with all its surrogates, nationalism, anti-Europeanism and so on, catches. So I believe that the PSD electorate is close to the gold electorate, having about the same sociodemographic characteristics. They make there a common value horizon. As a result, Nicușor Dan's chances of getting the vote in this area, does not exist. This is also why Negrescu and Stoiciu insisted on a clear position. Like at least those who are disciplined, they can orient themselves in this direction ”, Cristian Pîrvulescu also explained.
By the lack of position, “In fact, PSD and Ciolacu gave a clear voting indication for Simion. They could not give it hard, because the whole of Europe would have resolved, but I have the impression that in their calculations a gold collaboration is not, at the moment, totally taken from the calculation ”the political scientist also indicated.
Lack of action of European Socialists
The party was attacked even from outside the borders, among the colleagues from the PPE for the lack of official positioning, but a concrete positioning was refused from the S&D peak. The leader of European socialists, Iratxe García said, according to Politico, that the situation is “delicate” in Romania.
The political scientist Cristian Pîrvulescu indicated that there will be very likely a protest action by European socialists.
“Did the European social-democrats abandoned those from the Simir of Fițo? No. And for a long time. Fito still appears as a socialist, although nothing is socialist in what he does and proposes. There is also the situation in Croatia, equally. The reality is that the social-democracy and socialism of the Western type have not succeeded. It was not sufficient, because party logic makes the power in general be taken by the loyal and not necessarily by the competent ones.
The party led by Marcel Ciolacu, although not so far officially allied with gold in the Romanian Legislature, has led a fight side by side with the members of this party against the former government and the restrictive measures in the coronavirus pandemic. Now, Marcel Ciolacu has given assurances that as long as he is a party president there will be no collaboration with gold, but the mandate of the former prime minister is to be analyzed on the table of PSD leaders after the final presidential election on May 18.
If the former prime minister leaves, and the party will still reach a collaboration with the formation led by George Simion, his future is uncertain. “He thinks he will be able to control and take gold, only that gold is not PNL. So when gold will enter the PSD, PSD will be cannibalized.”, Cristian Pîrvulescu also pointed out.
