The group of the European People's Party (PPE) of the European Parliament condemns the decision of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) not to support the pro-European candidate, Nicuşor Dan, in the second round of the presidential elections, while supporting the PNL decision and the UDMR to provide support for it.

PSD “failed to show his commitment to European values,” the PPE group said on Tuesday in a press release.

“The decision of the Social Democratic Party in Romania not to support the pro-European candidate is simply unacceptable. I am waiting for a clear commitment to support the only pro-European candidate. In the face of growing extremism throughout Europe, there is no place for political games. We fully support our member parties to support Nicușor,” communicated.

Manfred Weber sent the same message, in Romanian, and in a post on his Facebook page.

“Romania plays an essential role in the European Union, especially in terms of Union security, being on the border with Ukraine. A anti-European, populist and extremist candidate, such as George Simion, who has a prohibition to enter both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, represents a threat not only for the security Siegfried Mureşan, vice -president of the PPE group.

“The PPE group fully supports the decision of the PPE member parties – the National Liberal Party and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania – to support Nicuşor Dan. The real commitment of a political party to the European values is proved by concrete decisions such as this, not only through statements or pompous formulations in the internal documents of the party,”

The PPE is the largest political group in the European Parliament.
