Prime Minister Romania resigned due to the results of the first round of the presidential election

The coalition meeting was devoted to the results of the president’s repeated elections, the first round of which was held on May 4.

Cholak noted that the ruling coalition was formed in December 2024 for two goals: to ensure a “stable government” and nominate a candidate who can win the election of the President of Romania.

“We did not reach one of the two goals. We saw the Romanian vote yesterday, it means that the ruling coalition has no legitimacy. I invited my colleagues to leave the ruling coalition, which indirectly leads to my resignation from the post of prime minister, which I will do after meeting with you,” the prime minister said.

According to him, in the second round of the PSD presidential election, PSD will not publicly support any of the candidates, and personally party members may vote as you like.

The temporarily acting President of Romania Elijan Blucyans accepted the resignation of Cholak and stated that the acting The Prime Minister will be appointed on May 6.

Cholaku was appointed Prime Minister of Romania on June 15, 2023.
