An unexpected incident took place recently in China, during a public presentation of the H1 humanoid robot, created by Unitree. In the middle of the demonstration, the robot suddenly began to move in a chaotic and seemingly aggressive way, arousing panic among those present, reports the T4 portal.
At first glance the behavior of the robot seemed like a “Escape attempt”, But the developers came with a scientific explanation. The robot was caught with a safety cable, a standard measure in such tests, but this cable interfered with the robot stability system.
UNITREE representatives explained that H1's algorithms are designed to maintain balance during free movement. The safety cable prevented the robot from correcting the position changes correctly, which led to exaggerated reactions and uncontrolled movements, experts say.
The developers also stated that “This incident is a typical example of how incorrect external conditions can cause a unpredictable behavior at robots with sensitive stabilizer algorithmse ”.
Even though the robot reactions seemed alarming, the specialists say that there was no time when the situation was out of control. “The situation was permanently under control ”they transmitted, stressing that H1 has no real autonomy and is not a danger.
“This incident does not represent a threat to the future of robotics, but it reminds once again the complexity of its calibration”said Unitree representatives.
However, the incident highlights how important the careful calibration of the algorithms and the application of strict safety measures in the development of humanoid robots is.
