Elena Lasconi announced on Monday, May 5, resignation from the position of president of the Union Save Romania (USR).
“The decision comes from a period marked by political and personal challenges, and the gesture was assumed with responsibility and confidence in the future of USR and Romania”the party said.
In his message, Elena Lasconi emphasized the commitment to the values that were the basis of the USR founding and reaffirmed her support for continuing the fight against corruption and for a right and modern Romania.
“The time has come for a heavy decision. I resign from the position of USR president. So I think it is correct, natural and well at this time. I resign with the reconciled heart that in the last year I did everything for me to be better“, Elena Lasconi said.
Lasconi also stated that our country is going through a complicated period, full of challenges, so it is necessary for our efforts to be directed to support a pro-European course and accelerated the efforts to change a system that has proven non-functional in the interest of citizens.
“I did, I say, everything that was right for a man who wanted USR to be totally something other than the old political class. I fought with all my power with a rotten, corrupt system, which keeps us 35 years old. Maybe I also made mistakes in this course, but I never abandoned the good faith and we hope that, together, we have to create this year,”said Elena Lasconi.
Elena Lasconi thanked the party colleagues, supporters and all those who were with them in this course: “Thank you very much for showing me confidence, respect, support. And I mean you, my colleagues from USR, you, supporters, volunteers, people I have never met, but who have believed in me.”
Even if he withdraws from the management position, Elena Lasconi announces that she will remain active in public life and in the effort to change the old political class and dedicated to the public service: “You can rely on me that I am just as determined to help with all power any step that will make us get rid of a bastard system.

The decision of the head of the USR comes after a result with a difference of approximately 16 percent of the presidential elections 2025 compared to the first round of the election canceled last year. Elena Lasconi ranked fifth place, obtaining less than 3% of the votes. In November 2024 he obtained 19.17% of the votes.
The head of the USR was abandoned by the party during the presidential campaign. USR has announced only one week after the onset of the campaign that it withdraws its political support and supports Nicușor Dan, a former member and founder of the party.
