Zosima Bee

Zosima Solovetsky – the Holy Russian Church, revered in the face of the Monk. He was born in the Novgorod diocese, later moved to Pomorie, where he met with monks Herman and Savvaty. In 1436, they together built a cell on the Solovetsky Island. Soon, the students who built the temple and the monastery – the famous Solovetsky monastery began to flock to Zosima.

Both Zosima and Savvatiy in Rus' were considered the patrons of bees and intercessors of beekeepers. By the Day of Zosima, like Pudov Day, they timed to the export of hives to apiaries. At this time, in the middle of the apiary, they put a table covered with a clean tablecloth, they laid out bread and salt, Epiphany water and a candle remaining from the Easter in training. After that, they prayed to Zosima and Savvatia and walked around the apiary with a lit candle, sprinkling the territory with consecrated water. At the same time, they sentenced: “Roy is swarming – Zosima is having fun.”

The beekeepers carefully watched insects, flying around the primroses. They said, for example: “To what bread the bee went for – he will be good for the grain.” They also watched how the bees survived the winter: “Little loss in bees – to the harvest of buckwheat.”

The people were very revered by the bees. Many sayings are composed about them: “Without a bee (that is, without wax), the pop and the impoverish does not serve”; “Mala-Mala bee, but knows more great”; “In order to drive bees, we must love them with the heart”; “There is no bad year for a good beekeeper”; “A kind person and a bee does not sting.”

On this day it was considered a good thing to taste honey. In Rus', by the way, they ate not only in its pure form, but also prepared all kinds of dishes with it. Honey was added even to food from meat, poultry and fish. Pork or duck baked in honey was very popular. No less loved with a mead – a drink from honey and spices.
