It has been added that this influence operation should be seen in a broader context, as part of Russia's actions aimed at causing disagreement in transatlantic relations and weakening Western support for Ukraine. The desire to influence the result of parliamentary elections in Greenland was considered less likely.

Diplomatic relations between Denmark and the United States remain tense since January after President Donald Trump's territorial claims against Greenland. The island is an autonomous territory depending on the authorities in Copenhagen.
