There are problems again at the bridge over the Danube in Braila, nicknamed Golden Gate from Romania. For the fifth time, the object has entered the process of asphalting, a worrying statistic given that the bridge is less than a year old.

The works concern the meaning of Braila – Tulcea, where the workers remove the old asphalt layer – a process made both mechanically and manually, to protect the special foil between the metal table and the asphalt layer. In the past, this foil would have been damaged during the work, generating high replacement costs.

This time, the authorities hope that the new bituminous mixture, tested in a laboratory in Italy, will have a higher resistance to heavy traffic and temperature variations.

However, the manual discovery will extend the duration of the works, and the relaunch of the traffic in normal regime is estimated only for the first decade of June.

The bridge over the Danube from Braila was inaugurated in the summer of 2023. Since then, it has been in the center of attention because of the problems. A passerby noticed that numerous screws are not tight what has aroused a wave of comments and ironies. Then, the access portion on the Brazilian bank to tend, forcing the builder to take measures.

Several times, the asphalt on the bridge has broken and was repaired. Moreover, the bridge was not received by the Romanian authorities due to the problems listed and because a connecting road on the Tulcea bank was not completed/given.

The bridge over the Danube from Braila, the largest suspended bridge built in Romania, the third in size in Europe and the last bridge over the Danube before the Black Sea was inaugurated a year ago, on July 6, 2023, but was affected by several problems on the asphalt surface.

The bridge has a length of about 2 kilometers and gives the drivers an alternative, outside the Danube crossing, to reach the coast.
